shot down. The Chief officer had meanwhile been ordered to remain in the wheel-house, Some resistance was offered to the pirates by the Indian guards, one of whom was killed and others wounded. The pirates retained control of the ship until about 4 a.m. and then left in the ship's boats at a place named Sai Ma Ling. The "Tai Lee" proceeded to Kongmoon and discharged her cargo and passengers. It is clear that members of the crew of the S.S. "Tai Lee", notably the boatswain were in league with the pirates if not the actual organisers of the piracy.

An enquiry was held by the Coroner into the death of Captain Willox and it was abundantly clear that no attempt was made on board the "Tai Lee" to maintain discipline or real command by the European officers. I shall refer again to this aspect of the matter.

Other piracies which have taken place recently on the Canton Delte include that of two motor boats belonging to the Asiatic Petroleum Company in the East River, the 8.S. "Kwong Tak" a launch hired in Honglong ostensibly to visit Castle Peak Bay which was, however, found and sunk by an armed launch of the Chinese Maritime Customs and a Swedish vessel the S.8. "Salen", chartered to a Hongkong Company, which was run ashore at the entrance to Escape Creek which was know to be the haunt of the gang commected with the "Tai Lee" piracy. During the evening of the 2nd of March the S.8. "Kwong Shun" a ferry launch plying between Shamshuipo and Hongkong, wholly within the harbour limits was suddenly seized. It was located some ten days later in a creek near Cone Island by armed vessels sent by the Government of Macao.
